Before we get going, this post about mental health is in NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM aiming to TREAT, CURE or DIAGNOSE. This post is for information purposes only. If you have any suspicions that you might be suffering any of the following content. Please consult your own personal doctor.

According to the world health organisation “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”

For me and my clients I define mental health as “Having a balance in your life to able to cope with a multitude of situations. Not becoming over stressed, remaining positive but able to embrace and deal with all your emotions appropriately. Being able to live your life to your own expectations and being happy within your own skin.”

When most of think about mental health, typically our minds shift straight to depression and anxiety. I know for me it does anyways. And chaps, it’s something to be massively aware of! Suicide rates among men are the highest they’ve been as long as records have been kept. According to the office of national statistics in the UK around three quarters of all of registered suicide deaths were men!

Mental health isn’t just about suicide though. It’s about so much more than that. There cannot be happiness without sadness, there cannot be light without dark and there cannot be peace without balance. The whole about yin and yang has a huge impact when it comes to mental health. I believe that mental health is influenced by so many factors and there are only a few that we can actually control.

How does mental health look to you?

Factors that influence mental health.

Now please let me clarify this my opinion and not backed by research. However, some of my opinions are back by research as well as real world observations of delivering thousands of hours of coaching sessions

Check you below for my input for what causes mental health issues.

  1. Socioeconomic pressure. Also known as keeping up with the Jones’. There is pressure on us fellas to make sure we have a own a home, or rent a nice place, have a good job, have a nice car, go on the right holidays, have the right gadgets and have disposable cash to blow on what we want.
  2. Having the right partner/marriage/relationship. This comes with its own pressures and expectations from family members, peer groups and even strangers on social media.
  3. Having the body you want or people expect you to have. This is always a tough one, sometimes a good physique will boost your confidence, self-esteem and overall mental health outlook. However not having the physique you want or people expect you to have can cause you stress, anxiety, depression, comfort eating and all those other associated issues.
  4. Genuine illness. Depression is both an emotional state as well as an actual physical condition that occurs in the brain. There can be factors in the gut that impact on how well your body produces neurotransmitters (chemicals that influence how you feel and how your body responds). The function, uptake use of neurotransmitters in the brain is what can directly impact your mental state. There are also genetic factors that come into play here as well, but that is a rabbit hole that takes us too far away from the mental health blog.
  5. Medication, depending on if you’re having to take different types of medication that can also impact on how well your body can transport and use nutrients, particularly in the gut and in the brain.

What can you do about these factors?

1. See a therapist. This doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong with you at all. The way I see it is that seeing a therapist is like seeing a PT for your mind. We’ve all got those soul searching questions that we deny we really want the answers to. But I know first-hand

2. from experience that once I started going to see a therapist, my blood pressure and stress levels went right down. I was able to discuss things with an impartial party without judgement and get some answers.

3. Set your own expectations, don’t live by others. When my marriage broke down I upset a lot of people by leaving the marriage and not fighting for it. But I knew for me deep down it was the right thing to do for my own mental health and physical health. I stopped doing what people expected me to do, I stood up for myself and did what was right for me. It’s a brutal thing to do and unbelievably hard to do. Without my friends and my family I would never have been able to do it. God knows where I would have ended up.

4. Work with a very forward thinking health care professional like a functional medicine doctor. Naturopath or shaman. The difference in working with this type of person is immense! They’ll explore all aspects of health, try to find the root causes and treat those issues. Rather than treat the obvious signs or symptoms with medications.

How do I implement all this?

It’s nearly impossible to do on your own, you need to work with a professional or somebody that you trust implicitly. But if you go down the road of healing, be prepared for things to get worse before it gets better.

Mental health is a huge field and there have been professionals in this field since the 1800’s, the more complex our lives become, the more we need simple solutions in my opinion. There is so much detail and information online now, it’s hard to see the wood through the trees. It’s easy to self-diagnose with just about everything that could be potentially wrong as you see it.

This is why I’m a big fan of seeing a therapist and getting genuine personalised help.

A few east tips that I can give you that don’t cost any money whatsoever are the following.

  1. Get outside without distraction of work. Get out, go for a walk and go to your favourite spot in nature. Take some music or just be with your thoughts. No messages, no calls, just time for yourself.
  2. Get sweaty at least 3 times a week. This can be running outside, sitting in a sauna if you have access to one, going to the gym or getting busy in the bedroom. By sweating you release a lot of toxins out of your system that can’t be excreted any other way. There is also the hormone release that comes with sweating and being physical that can boost your mood and improve your state of mind
  3. Meditate and breathe, it sounds simple, it sounds weird, and its sounds like a hippy/Buddhist thing to do but I cannot emphasise just how good it is for you. Learning to slow down, breathe through your nose, and just be present can lower your blood pressure, give you a sense of clarity and purpose and genuinely help. If meditation is new to you, and you don’t really know what to do. I’d suggest using an app called headspace, it’s free to download and the first 100 minutes are free. Massively recommended!

Summing It All Up

Mental health isn’t just about depression or the negative side that we hear about in the media. It’s about being happy, finding balance and handling emotions in a healthy manner. Firstly that does no harm to yourself and secondly no harm to others.

Always, always seek advice from a qualified medical professional if you’re feeling low, depressed anxious, suicidal or just not right about your health.

NEVER ever let anyone play down your symptoms and tell you to just cheer up and get on with it.

It’s a tough world out there guys and you’re all doing a great job to keep going and getting up each day.

As always, if you want to chat any further, get in contact.

Big love
